Environmental Research Initiative Committee (ERIC)

In the fall of 2003, Dr. Harris Pastides, USC's Vice President for Research, appointed the University Environmental Research Committee (later to become ERIC) to examine the potential for environmental research at the University of South Carolina. The general perspective of the committee was to encompass the entire institution, with the objective of contributing to the construction of multidisciplinary, integrative, large-scale research and center-creating proposals. The committee has the following members:

The Vice President charged the committee with the following tasks:

  1. Identify areas where the university has strengths in multidisciplinary environmental research.
  2. Identify the most likely sources of external funding that match the university's strength in environmental research.
  3. Establish a limited number of major environmental themes for pursuing large, multidisciplinary grants.

During 2004, the committee received proposals from throughout the university, submitted the proposals to external reviewers, and ultimately recommended university funding for the research projects listed on this site.
